二年後のケータイの世界 [プロダクト]
2010年頃をめどに、携帯電話キャリア各社が統一の通信規格を採用する意向が固まった。
これにより、我々は端末を変えなくともキャリアを自由に選ぶ事が出来るようになる。
2010年というともうあと二年たらずの世界だ。
その年を境に、日本のケータイ市場は劇的に変化することが予想されている。
この出来事で各方面で言われているのはキャリア同士でのシェア争いの激化だ。現在でも契約方法に応じて料金プランを安くするなどしているが、その動きは増々慌ただしくなっていくだろう。
今回はそのことよりも、規格統一によってケータイのデザインにどういった変化が表れるのかについて考えてみたい。
まず、キャリアからメーカーへのデザインへの拘束が無くなる事による変化が挙げられる。
現状は、機能・デザインなどはキャリアの意向が絶対であり、その為思い切った製品を開発出来ていない場合も多い。拘束が無くなる事で、メーカーにはより一層独自のアイデンティティを組み込んだ開発をして頂きたいものだ。
次にGUI（グラフィック・ユーザー・インターフェース）の互換性の問題。
個人的にはこの部分が一番大変なのではないかと思っている。
今の日本のケータイはコンテンツサービスを重要視した流れになっている。
それはキャリアごとに特色の出ているものである。
もしA社からB社へキャリアを変えた際に、同じサービスを受けようとしても、そこでの名称が一つ違うだけでユーザー側が混乱してしまう可能性は十分ある。
キャリアを関係なく操作上の互換性はしっかりとしていなければならないし、そうならない為には早い段階から取り組む必要はある。
そうでないと、キャリアを選ぶ際の弊害の一つにもなりえるだろう。
一つ怖い事を思った。
ひょっとしたら2010年以降、更にケータイ事業から撤退するメーカーが増えるので無いかと言う事。
そして、どのケータイもほとんど同じデザインになってしまうので無いかと言う事。
現在のようにキャリアの意向が強い事で、反って助けられているメーカーもあるのではないか。
キャリア内で一括りになることで、自然と競争が抑えられているとも言えなくもない。
とりあえず固定のキャリアと契約しているから、事業撤退を免れているメーカーもあるのではないだろうか。その括りが無くなる事でメーカーは自信のブランド力のみで勝負するしかない。
早々と競争を諦め保身に走るメーカーも出て来そうだ。
そして残ったメーカーの製品は、キャリア間の互換性の問題から今以上に画一的な製品に落ち着いて行ってしまう可能性のもありうるのでは無いか。もしそうなってしまったら本末転倒だ。
自由に開発出来ると思いきや、それ以上に拘束が強くなってしまう可能性もありえる。
メーカーが取り組むのは携帯電話端末を開発するというハードな部分だ。
しかし、ケータイ市場で莫大な利益を生み出せるのはソフトの部分に関わる業種である。
今後も様々なコンテンツ・サービスは出てくると思うし、今以上にソフト面の役割は大きくなってくる。
となると、ソフトが大きく主導権を握ってしまったら、せっかく開発した技術を活かしきれないメーカーも出て来そうだ。コンセプトモデルなどで良くみられる「先進的で感覚的な使用感」などを実用化出来たとしても、それとコンテンツとの融合が巧く成されなければ意味は無い。
