『Beomaster 2400-2』に見るモダンデザイン

家電製品にタッチパネルが導入され始めたのはつい最近の事だと思っていたが、どうやらそんな事は無いようだ。

1979年に発売されたB&Oのレシーバー「Beomaster 2400-2」にはリモコンこそ付属されているものの、本体の操作はタッチパネルで行なう。実はこれが発売される前にも、東芝やヒューレット・パッカードからタッチパネルを搭載した製品が発売されていたらしい。（詳しい製品名は不明）
あまりにも高額な製品だったため普及するまでには至らなかったが、1970年代にこうしたものが既にあったことには驚く。

このBeomasterを見る限り、現代にも通じるモダンデザインの根本的な考え方は、1970年代には既に完成されていたかのように思える。B&Oの製品にならずとも、バウハウスから生じた非装飾的でありインテグレート（統合・総和）なデザインは、この時代に一つの答えを導きだしていたのだろう。
もちろん、時代毎にその解釈の仕方は少しずつ変わってはいるが、基本的にそのデザインは一つのレールの延長線上にあると思う。

またまたiphoneの話になるが、iphoneもまたこのレールの上にあるデザインだと思う。
シンプルで革新的なデザインだとかタッチパネルが凄いだとか騒いでいるけど、結局の所それらは1970年代のモダンデザインの延長であり、技術力が高まったことでより高度なデザインにすることが出来た...という結果でしかないと思う。

つまり、iphoneはまぎれもなく20世紀のデザインと言えるのかもしれない。
だから、多くの企業・人がiphoneが最先端のプロダクトと誤認している限り、世界はまだまだ20世紀からは抜け出す事が出来ないのかもしれない。本当の意味での21世紀・未来を予感させるデザインはもう少し時間が経たないと現れてこないと思う。現代の未来は、1970年代の未来の延長線上にしかないのだから。

どうしてこういう現状なのか考えたが、1980〜90年代のデザインにどうやら原因がありそうだ。
1970年代頃から流行りだしたCI戦略に始まり、80年代以降に製品にも企業らしさが求められる様になっていった。そこで、従来の装飾とは違うけれども、いかにオリジナリティを際立たせるか？という要求に応える為、デザインはより一層スタイリングに力を注ぐ様になった。

バブル崩壊以降、そうした凝ったデザインはコストがかかるため敬遠され始めた。代わりに作りやすくて使い回しのきく低コストのデザインが求められるようになる。経済の不安定さがミニマムなデザインを必要としたのだ。加えて、イームズなどのミッドセンチュリーの家具が注目を浴び始め、それらの家具のシンプルさが再評価されることになったのも、こうした時代の流れと関係ないとは言えないだろう。

こうして、1970年代のモダンデザインの流れが時代を超えて現代に置き換えられているのだと思う。

ここまで書くと、本当にモダンデザインはモダンなのか？という疑問にぶつかる。
今の僕らの感覚としてのモダンは、既にレトロではないのだろうか？

そもそも、モダンデザインだなんて言葉自体が既に意味不明だ。
「モダン＝シンプルでカッコいい」だとしても、そのモダンとは一体なんなんだ？
1970年代に完成されていたモダンのレールの上にあるモダンであるならば、それはモダンではなく間違いなくレトロだ。
そうした、コトバの持つ意味・感覚としてのモダンと、実際の時代を表すモダンとを比べると、あまりにも大きくて深い溝があるように思えて仕方がならない。

今、僕たちが目指しているデザインは未来へのものなのか？
それとも過去へと戻っているだけなのか？

少なくとも、過去にはまだまだ僕たちが気づいていない未来が沢山ある...と思う。
過去にある未来を消化しない限り、次の時代の未来は想像出来ないだろう。

時代を読み取った正当なデザインにまとめあげるのも面白いが、そういった既成観念の枠からはみ出したひねくれ者のデザインもする必要はある。うん、そう思う。

そういったことの出来る異端児が、今のデザイン界には少ないように思う。
巧くまとめられる優等生タイプは沢山いるんですけど...ね。

Aw, this was a really fantastic post. In theory I’d prefer to write like this also – taking time and actual work to generate an excellent report… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and in no way appear to get a thing completed.
