Olafur Eliassonの人工の滝

現在、ニューヨークシティーのハドソン川西岸にパブリックアートとして人工の滝が存在している。
手がけたのは芸術家のOlafur Eliasson。自然を対象としたインスタレーションを得意とし精力的に活動している。この滝は、ポンプで川の水を汲み上げ放出されている。画像を見ての通り夜になればライトアップされとても綺麗だ。写真のものと合わせて４カ所に設置されており、観光客の評判も良い。

その滝が原因で、地元住民からあるクレームが上がっている。

どうやら滝のしぶきによって、周辺の灌木や植物が枯れてしまうという現象が起きているとのこと。
川の水なのに何故？と思うだろうが、滝が設置された場所は大西洋に近いため塩分が強いのだという。
こうしたクレームを受けて、一周間あたりの展示時間を101時間から約50時間と半減させることが決まった。期間も９月中旬に短縮して欲しいという申し出もあったが、そこに関しては当初通りの１０月中旬と変わらずに行なうという。

この人工の滝、かなりの時間と予算を組んでいただけに、この結末はなんとも悲しい。市当局は環境への影響は事前に調査していたとも言っているけど、結果として問題は起きてしまった。

これを考えたOlafur Eliasson氏のコメントなどは分からないが、本人も肩を落としているに違いない。
人々を楽しませる・喜ばせるためのアートが、人と環境に迷惑をかけてしまう結果になってしまったからだ。自然をモチーフとした作品を多く制作しているだけに、この問題は本人にとって色々と考えさせられることになるでしょう。

こうした近年のアート作品を見ていると、アートという定義や役割もどんどん変わってきているなぁと思います。それが最も顕著に表れているのは、村上隆氏の作品でしょうが。

それと同じくらいデザインの定義も変わってきている、そんな21世紀です。
